WEEKEND ROTGUT: The Manhattan
By Tom Madden FOR LA2DAY.COM 27 Jun 2008

-Bitters
-2 ½ ounces bourbon (or rye if you so prefer)
-1 ounce of that sweet vermouth
Maraschino cherry or lemon twist
Shake one or two drops of bitters into a glass, steadily rotating the glass while pouring. Remember you want to just coat the glass in a residue, so shake that excess Bitter's out and proceed. Mix your bourbon with the sweet vermouth in a mixing glass, and add some ice. Shake the sucker up, strain, and pour. Add a cherry or lemon twist for some visceral fun!
This is truly a drink for all seasons; an acquired taste for those of weak virility, the Manhattan has been a staple of the cocktail familia since 1874. Sure the brute ingredients of the Manhattan might make those pretty painted lips quiver, but fear not ladies, for this fine quencher was invented for Lady Randolph Churchill (you know, Winston's mum). So whether at the Broadway in downtown, or sitting poolside, give this classic a go.
My Uncle and Father schooled me in the fine art of Manhattan making, and I must say, the Manhattan will indeed better your palate for the sauce.
