This Weekend: Get Punky Party People
By Jordan Whitley FOR LA2DAY.COM 08 Aug 2008

Hot August Nights are in full swing here in the City of Angels, and it's time to ditch the suit and get loose on the dance floor. Because nothing says summer fun like busting a move with a bunch of sweaty strangers.
In true guerilla form, we've scoured the city to bring you the top nightlife picks for this weekend . All boast killer grooves, and you won't see a stinkin' velvet rope or a snippy blond publicist with a clipboard for miles. (You're welcome.)
FRIDAY 8/8: PUNKY REGGAE PARTY (Downtown)
It's vinyl only at this weekly Rasta-Meets-The-Ramones shindig.

Kick off your weekend with some old school stylin' at our favorite downtown cantina, La Cita, for the retro grade Punky Reggae Party. DJs spin the vinyl in this sea of fedoras, leather jackets and The Clash T's. Beats from the Specials to Fishbone to Sister Nancy get this crowd rolling till the wee hours.
Where does the Reggae come in you ask? Let's just say things tend to get pretty "irie" in this joint.
SATURDAY 8/9: ROCK THE BELLS (Glen Helen)
San Bernadino just got a little bit hotter.
When Saturday hits and you've got all day sober to Sunday up, we say go big or go home. And it doesn't get any bigger than Rock the Bells, an all out neo-soul funkified hip hop fest with all your old faves.

At Rock the Bells, it's time to wax nostalgic: All those artists on your mixed hip-hop tape from 1994 are going explode onto the stage in San Bernadino (except for, thank god, Criss Cross.)
A Tribe Called Quest, Method Man, Mos Def, and The Roots bring the raw beats, while Santogold and Nas usher in the new millienium of hybrid rap. Performances across two stages last all day. Get tickets at Guerilla Union.
SUNDAY 8/10: BURLESQUE AT BORDELLO (Downtown)
Downtown's oldest brothel takes you back to 1929 and puts on one hell of a show.

On a dark and unassuming corner off Alvarado, under the guise of Little Pedro's, this chandelier-clad, speakeasy kind of space is quite the gem. Bordello Bar "flirts with the notorious past of its infamous location, as the oldest bar and brothel in Downtown Los Angeles, by reflecting its legendary status as a theater of the unusual and provocative."

Taking a break from their classic Sunday night burlesque, Bordello puts a spicier spin on things with Madame Sunset's Hollywood Kitten Showtroupe. "With a focus on Femine Beauty and Electrifying Show Content the show incorporates Classic Burlesque, Vaudeville Themes of Modern and Classic Times, Sketch Comedy, Cabaret Showgals." Meeee-owwww! Show at 10. Reservations required.
So please, take advantage of all this social goodness over the next three days. And if we hear that any of you opted to watch the Lifetime's Fallen Angels Marathon or compete in your neighbor's Wii karate tournament rather than hit the town, we will smirk and send pity in your general direction.
