A NIGHT AT L'EFFLEUR DES SENS

Upon walking into the performance of L'effleur Des Sens at King King, it was almost like walking into a speak easy in old Paris. Girls in garters and lingerie lined the walls piquing your interest. Every patron was well dressed, attractive and enticing. There wasn’t a moment I didn’t feel at ease but at the same time excited and almost aroused. The place was packed and we had the best seats in the house. Edith Pilaf cooed throughout the bar as woman danced like does and men in berets were like hunters trying to capture their prey. The seduction that was on display was subtle and very sexy. I thought this was part of the show, but it had yet to begin. It took me back to the days of yore when women were beautiful, feminine yet vulnerable and men were macho and morally subdued. I took it in with every breath right away.

The show began with the MC, a much more attractive and modern Joel Grey in Cabaret, introducing the ladies with panache and enthusiasm. This to me is the quintessential Hollywood performance, the most beautiful woman you will see up close and music to tap your feet to. The costumes were nothing short of divine and the choreography could almost give Chicago a run for its money. The women sang beautiful sonnets that made you so entranced you almost forgot where you were. The chair dance, the aerial solo and the tap dancing number took me back to my days as a dancer and I almost shed a tear. Every number that we experienced played with your heart and took you on a journey. Every act no matter what was happening, could stand on it’s own. It was like a visual painting and the dancers where creating this thoughtful imagery in your mind that will not be soon forgotten. The only thing that I wish would have happened is that there was more consistency, the music and the performances were captivating and moving but it could of moved in a more linear fashion. This is not a gripe negative; it’s simply an observation. After seeing a lot of boring over priced so called "art" performances with a bit of flash and nothing else, L'effleur Des Sens did it exactly what I hoped for, to be entertained. I highly recommend this show to anyone that enjoys the old world style of the stage and wants to take a trip out of the day to day dullness that we can all find ourselves in.
