Show Patrol: Gig Guide for September 29-October 5
By Jemayel Khawaja FOR LA2DAY.COM 29 Sep 2008

This may possibly be the worst time for such a good week of shows to head our way. Just when we've all come to grips with the fact that we will be eating scraps and scrounging up quarters stuck in between the couch cushions to make rent, seven days of (expensive) aural bliss enter our earspace.
WEDNESDAY/THRUSDAY: My Bloody Valentine
My Bloody Valentine sets up shop at the Santa Monica Civic Center on the 1st and 2nd of October. Bands don't come much more influential than this lot. Their seminal album Loveless is the soundtrack to countless mid-thirties quasi-intellectuals' respective musical awakenings. Kevin Shields' lush, post-pop hooks are buried under a sea of beautiful noise and I'm quite intrigued to see if the band is able to pull it off live. They tour about once a generation, so this may be your only chance to see your older brother swoon like the spotty sixteen year old nerd he was when he first heard MBV. Wallet, you take that $48 hit and you like it!

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros are doing their own two night stint at the Greek theater on October 2nd and 3rd. This may be the worst instance of tour planning I have ever seen, as Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine appeal directly to the same market. This is the band that invented and perfected the ambient swells of sound that have come to define post-rock in this era. They're liable to take their own orchestra on tour as well. Their new album is actually a little less ethereal than their older material, but fear not, they'll still be the loudest band you could ever fall asleep to. If you don't have tickets, take it as a blessing because this one was expensive.

FRIDAY: Deerhoof

If all this wasn't enough, Deerhoof roll into The Avalon on Friday, October 3rd. The ambiguous jinky-pop-experimental-noise band are touring on the back of their newest and most accessible album Offend Maggie and are still one of the coolest bands in commission. They can be identified by Greg Saunier's angular, tight drumming interplaying with John Dieterich's noisy but catchy guitar riffs and Satomi Matsuzaki's playful vocals. At $15, this one is the lightest on the wallet and The Avalon is a great setting in which to see a show and it is usually waaaaayyyyy more overpriced than this.

SATURDAY: Iron and Wine

To give your ears a little bit of lo-fi massaging at the end of the week, Sam Beam's Iron and Wine mosey on into the Greek on Saturday the 4th. This should give you a chance to mellow out and forget about the high pitched ringing in your ears, despite the fact that Iron and Wine's newest record is by far their most pronounced. It's useful to note, however, that a lot of their previous material is damn near inaudible at times. Pleasant songs that remind you of spending a lazy day on in the cornstalks of Ohio sung to you by an unassuming gentleman with a fuzzy beard.

Well, there is awesome music going on every night this week. You have no excuse. I mean, in addition to this, Jamie Lidell, Cut Copy, Beach House, and Gogol Bordello are also all playing in this city. Then again, you can go see Lifehouse at the LA County fair if that's more your bag.
