Recommended Change In Reality

With America trying to deliver the next flop disguised as an American Idol, the public should try to push authentic talent into the mainstream to avoid the annually perpetual letdown of “America getting it wrong.” Instead of voting for vocals only, why doesn’t FOX create a show giving us an opportunity at voting for an artist that can write, sing, and compose tracks each week? Why settle for singing when that is just one of the components to making desirable music? Until the inception of my brilliant idea comes to fruition, I have decided to find Southern California’s diamonds that I believe will soon emerge from the shadows to the CD racks at Best Buy, and introduce you to them.
Damon Rey – R&B/Acoustic
A student at the University of Southern California, Rey likely will succeed in the music industry. His lyrics are well written, and his tracks are aptly composed. His voice is unique. In a strange way, Rey’s voice is perfectly suited for mood swings. He shows his light hearted side in “Money Back” by asking a girl to repay him for the wasted money he spent on their time dating. After he perks up your spirit, Rey will help you hit rock bottom with “Quiet Are the Nights.” If you’re trying to get over a difficult breakup, I recommend skipping this track. His songs are very addicting. Even if you’re not a fan of this genre of music, you won’t have to “get used to” his style. Look for this Los Angeles based artist to emerge onto the scene soon.

Molly Jenson – Alternative/Folk/Rock
After hearing this talented songstress from Orange County, I was a bit surprised Jenson’s career hasn’t ascended quicker. She has a virtuous sound that could turn infatuation into love in an instant, or at least it would seem that way until the song elapsed. Jenson can change your disposition immediately with her optimistic lyrics delivered through her beatific pipes. For those reminiscing about someone that got away, “Thinking of You” has a melancholy tone that would leave you wondering if that person has reciprocated thoughts of fancy for you. Jenson won “Best Acoustic” at the San Diego Music Awards, and was the Artist of the Month for KGRL in March.
Jenson sounds like Sheryl Crow
Matt Costa – Indie/Folk
The great thing about Costa’s music is he could have written all of these songs forty years ago, and they would have been just as good. His music has a great shelf life, and should he achieve mainstream, Costa will be a name not quickly forgotten. The Huntington Beach native is touring, and his popularity is growing, so it’s possible that he may continue his rise toward fame. Costa has completed a video for “Mr. Pitiful.” Although it’s kitschy, it is charming, and fun to sing along to. Costa’s production is equivalent to mainstream artists, and is a safe bet to bring the spotlight to “Surf City” for other reasons than the beach.
Costa sounds like Don McLean
If history serves as a precursor for the future, American Idol has probably eliminated its best contestant already. The humiliating aspect of the show is finished, and Simon’s callousness has grown tired. So that leaves us with some undeserving winner left to be crowned champion to entertain us. Instead of wasting your time watching classic songs performed at a moderate adaptation, Southern California has bona fide artists making genuine music to listen to. It’s more productive and responsible. After all, isn’t the music what draws us, and keeps our attention? Until the consumer expects more, the industry won’t have to give more.
