LA2DAY Essential Summer Listening: Paul Oakenfold Brings The Best Of Sin City Home On New Perfecto Vegas Mix

In the new dawn of the digital DJ, artists like Deadmau5 or Tiesto reign supreme but one name has managed to maintain far longer than either of those titans and continues to leave a lasting legacy in the world of music that many doubted he could continue to do. Paul Oakenfold and his Perfecto Records label have long been synonymous with quality dance music and when you breathe a word about big-time DJ's, he's on the short-list for sure. That tends to happen when you remix and work with the biggest artists in the world. Along with having your own nights in places like Las Vegas (which is perfectly captured on his new "Perfecto Vegas" release) and then you know the brand has aged rather nicely.

"I think the key is to continue to reinvent yourself, stay true to your roots but also branch out and pursue different avenues," Paul told us. "With the residency, we knew that Vegas was a great place to establish a club night but it was rather unchartered territory. We've got a great team of people that bring a strong dynamic to the show; choreographers, videographers, lighting designers, etc. It's really been the hard work of everyone involved that's helped to make it a success."

In a way, Paul is the electronic equivalent of good friends U2, just in clubland. A true perfectionist with an unquestioned ear for "big tunes," he's continued to create new fans and find new artists with each passing compilation and his DJ sets from the locals like the Great Wall of China have seen the man achieve true rockstar status all in a genre of music that's far from the mainstream. But Oakey's always been integral in infusing both worlds. Whether it's his Hollywood film scores or A-list driven artist albums, few can say they've done more to help dance music maintain it's integrity while still trying to reach out to as many people as possible. This new mix album is no exception to the fact and boasts a bevy of soon-to-be big hits, features fresh new talent (Hello Adam White!) and even re-imagines some classics (a terrific trance version of Creamer and K's tribal "Wish You Were Here").

Paul Oakenfold

"I'm very happy with the way this compilation turned out," Paul professed. "It features a lot of the new Perfecto material that the young, talented producers on the label have been doing and the way it flows is a great representation of what you'd be hearing if you were in the club on a Saturday night."

The night at Rain has proven incredibly successful and enjoyable, which has also allowed Paul to play more in Los Angeles as well, as he did at the recent Electric Daisy Carnival where he closed out the first night in fine fashion.

"I thought it was a great festival and I enjoyed being able to close the night," Paul recalled. "I wanted to mix things up a bit so I played some newer, more underground tunes as well as some of the classics that the festival-goers always love to hear. "

That's Paul Oakenfold for you - always eager to please. He knows that people will always crave melody and fresh sounds and he's never lost sight of this fact despite what his critics may naysay.

"I try to bring something fresh to each project that I do so I don't stick to any particular format," Paul explained. "Whether Im working on a compilation or an album, each one is really an interpretation of where I am musically at that time."

Perfecto Vegas

Perfecto Vegas is more than just another Paul Oakenfold mix. With one listen to the mini-mix we've got in the player above and you will discover for yourself that this is an album that brims with fresh ideas and memorable anthems. It's this fact that Paul has always been able to pull off playing anthem after anthem that is a true testament to his skills as one of the finest tastemakers music has ever known, critics be damned. With albums like this one, it's certainly tough to argue against the man.
