DVD Releases for August 5th

 Family Ties: The Fourth Season

The 70s may have had Archie Bunker and Fonzie, but for those of us who grew up in the 80s there was only Alex P. Keaton.  Although tame by today's standards, during its run Family Ties stood alone as Hollywood's conservative stepchild.  Ronald Regan said the show was his favorite on television and even offered to appear in an episode.  That never happened of course and it's probably better that way. Season Four introduces us to Ellen Reed, Alex's tutor turned love interest who would later become the real life wife of Michael J. Fox.

Get Smart: Season One

Steve Carrell starred as Agent Maxwell Smart in this summer's action/comedy blockbuster Get Smart, and now the producers are capitalizing on the movie's success by releasing the entire first season of the original series on DVD.  The series ended in 1970 and it's doubtful anyone who grew up laughing with the bumbling Agent 86 cares enough about extras to rush out and buy the DVD.  Especially when they could watch classic episodes on TV Land and Nick at Nite.

Nim's Island

After challenging her audience with provocative roles in Taxi Driver, The Silence of the Lambs, and Nell, Jodie Foster has decided to dumb it down a little with Nim's Island, yet another fantastical epic that's big on CGI and small on story. What is Nim's Island? It's a magical place ruled by a young girl's imagination, of course!  Abigail Breslin, the little girl from Little Miss Sunshine, co-stars.

Story by James Famera.
