How To: Eat the Fat Off
BY Tiffany Savion FOR LA2DAY.COM Nov 25, 2008
We all know that this is the time of year for us to eat ourselves into delirium. From October to December we are over indulging - Halloween candies and Thanksgiving feasts to candy canes and assorted tins of popcorn over Christmas...no wonder losing weight is always one of America's top ten New Year's resolutions.
It is common for people to think that the best way to manage their weight is to cut their calorie intake to negative one hundred, but that's no bueno, my friends. What if we told you that you could eat more and still lose weight?
Our metabolism efficiency is one of the key factors in weight control as it helps our bodies burn calories effectively. One of the best ways to take reign over your metabolism is to eat 6 to 7 meals a day. We are so used to eating 2-3 catastrophic meals a day filled with things that our body breaks down into uselessness. So how to do we stomp this vicious cycle?
By eating small meals throughout the day, your metabolism will work hand in hand with you burning calories. Do yourself a favor and eat slower so that your body has a chance to know when it is comfortable. Try not to eat meals that leave you feeling stuffed. As time goes on your stomach will grow accustomed to the small meals and they will prove to be enough.
2. PROTEIN
Protein is said to have a high thermic effect of food. The body burns calories in the process of absorbing and breaking down foods. Make it a point to have protein in at least 3 out of the 6 meals a day. While protein and complex carbs use about 20-30% of their calories for digesting, simple fats and carbs only use 3%. This is why they end up being stored as body fat, so try to stay clear of refined carbs and saturated fats.
3. EAT EVERY 2-3 HOURS
If your body thinks that it will be a long time before it gets nutrients again, it is more likely to simply store the calories. Between your main meals grab a small handful of almonds or a piece of fruit to keep your sugar levels consistent and your body burning calories efficiently.
4. EXERCISE
After all this talk of eating, you may feel the need to lay on the couch, but don't give in to being a couch potato - stay active! If your body is recruiting all of its energy to sort through a huge meal, jogging will be the last thing on your mind. However, incorporating smaller meals into your diet will give you the extra needed bounce to exercise and burn the calories away.
Now the idea of grabbing a bite with a coworker at lunch or meeting a friend for coffee and a small pastry doesn‘t have to be gluttonous anymore. Pay close attention to your portion sizes, choose healthy meals that you enjoy, and take your time eating so that you can feel full when your body has had enough. Skipping meals is played out. Enjoy eating yourself to an amazing body.
