We Love: Lace
By Katy Smail FOR LA2DAY.COM 12 May 2008

If there were a material that whispered tales of petticoats spinning down cobbled streets and sunlight creeping through cob-webbed windows, of doilies under China tea cups and little girls on Sunday mornings, of Parisian whores and virginal angels, would you not be in rapture with the pure breadth of joy one fabric could bring? Would you not dress yourself up in such allusions in your every waking moment, and let it lead you into a restless reverie of sleep as well? Such sweet-tempered delight need not be confined to daydreams and make-believe because lace, dear reader, is spinning it's delicate web back over the fashion world.
No longer hidden in allusions of cheap lingerie, bridal veils and new romantics, lace is creeping out of the crypts like an intricate dream amongst the fashion-forward elite, consuming designers and fashionistas alike. Weaving new contexts from old-fashioned connotations, the new incarnations are like cut-out dolls made from fragile letters found in dusty chests. The dust is being blown away.

Emerging in its place is tulle in paintbox brights twisted into eccentric head pieces at Louis Vuitton S/S 08, playing on old-fashioned connotations to create a flock of "crazy old ladies."

Prada A/W 08 was a meditative obsession with Sunday Best dressing. Showing an entirely different side to the material, the creations were structured and stern with an almost perverted elegance. Rigid dresses in a heavy lace endow the fabric with a beautifully subverted strength. For those of a more delicate disposition turn to Emma Cook's dresses; fragile lace-spun slips and tights, these are heartbreak clothes made for running down cobbled streets at twilight and offer a softer look for summer. But how to turn these lace spun dreams to reality? Scour markets, thrift stores and haberdashery departments for scraps of antique lace and tulle to twist into your hair like little girls in faded photographs. |

There is something so considered about lace near the face, telling stories of veiled emotions and chaste romance. Vintage lace slips and petticoats are a pretty alternative to summer's ubiquitous floral dresses, lending you all the same twirling whimsy whilst looking as rare as little antiques. If top-to-tie lace sounds a little too bridal try lace tights for cobweb legs that look oh so pretty slipping out of boyish brogues. So many ways to tiptoe into a summer laced with style...
