We Hate: Maxi Lengths
By Dana Poblete FOR LA2DAY.COM 21 May 2008

In Truffaut's Day for Night, Alphonse continually poses the question: Are women magic? The response of one man is, "Not women, their legs!" So why on Earth would a woman consider wandering the streets of Los Angeles hiding her gorgeous gams in favour of floor-grazing get-ups? The thought of it makes me shudder as I have always been quite the advocate of mini lengths. This trend is creeping into fashion's Spring wardrobes, and I don't like it one bit.

Gypsy 05, a brand capitalizing on this horrendous style, is popular amongst celebrities like Christina Aguilera and Lauren Conrad - not exactly inspiring muses. There's nothing flattering, fresh, or exciting about the maxi dress. Not only is the length oppressive to the sublime powers of a woman's legs, but the shape itself seems to swallow up any traces of the female form. Even Keira Knightley and Rachel Bilson, both very pretty women, when caught wearing the maxi are to be found lost in a sea of fabric. If this look doesn't work for them, it's not going to work for anyone.
Fashion is always interested in moving forward, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Legs are assets women of all sizes should embrace, so let's keep our mini lengths close to our hearts and knees and parade around town proudly in them. Unless you are of the type who fancies herself frumpy - and I don't know anyone who would purposefully adhere to that credence - then you too will boycott the burka-esque maxi.
