The Look: Rachel Kolar
By Dana Kline FOR LA2DAY.COM 15 May 2008

Surrounded by the works of Eugene O'Neil and Jean Genet, William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, writer and vocalist Rachel Kolar resides in an Echo Park, Los Angeles flat, her romantic humor coalesces with a tender, sultry style that's clearly painted on her languid frame. With long auburn tresses, she looks like she could've stepped out of one of the many books lying in stacks around the living room. She wears a vintage iridescent glass ring, placed in a markacite and silver band. A spectrum of light cascades upon mirrors, onto the diaries of Anais Niin: perhaps Niin wore that ring during an evening of vehemently writing under red lights, sipping Port in 1930s Paris. The ring's tarnished edges and subtle diamonds are both feminine and mildly decadent, radiating with mystery. A cigarette twirls between her fingers. Her look is attained; a stunning array of warm hues and eclectic textiles compile a world of eras.
Clad in natural, rich colors, each article of clothing is reminiscent of an element: a burnt orange and grey Lycra halter dress, with a scooped neck and a-symmetrical monochrome pattern meddles with layers of fire and earth. Bought at Jet Rag, this slinky curvaceous 70s era Jaclyn Smith-esque garb clings and reveals seductively, without imposing. With the hem sweeping her feet with each step, I'm reminded of a time when revealing little left more to the imagination.
| Suede and chains is a combination that never ceases to amaze me. This hide vest uniquely separated by slits and gold links can be worn over anything, from a disintegrating tee to long sleeves, but my favorite way is draped onto a gown. Acting as both a cape and sleeveless jacket, it creates a catalyst for the dress, adding a splash of iconic Twiggy. She bought it at Topanga Canyon's not so secret Hidden Treasures. Ostrich feathers act as part bracelet, part earring, illuminating terracotta shades with specks of blackened teal dots. Add a crème knit neckpiece and a white painted metallic pendant, doily shaped with a brass peacock - both from Melrose Trading Post - and the look is nearly complete. Last but not least, fresh from the sanded seas, a string of pearls wreath around her temples as a headband. | |
A long day's journey into night is hardly difficult when clad in such quixotic fashion, drenched in grace and fervor from head to toe.
