The Look: Alia Penner

Amongst paintbrushes and lace curtains, vibrant collages and scattered watercolors, Alia Penner saunters around her multi-hued home overlooking the the vast Los Angeles city perched on the tippy-top of Mount Washington. As an imperturbable breeze blows an array of scarves hanging off easels, handmade floral headdresses and rainbow infused cloud prints shift slightly, in sways, on the acrylic splattered floor. With a distinct style of symmetric lines, delicate dots, and soft blurs of fantasy twirls, her images always evoke an acute awareness of icons and fashion, starlets and musicians. Much like the aesthetic attire she clothes herself in, Alia's whimsical mixed media paintings and poster are bright and dreamy, both textured and era inspired.

Wearing a knee length tie dyed sleeveless dress, this Topanga Canyon find flows simply while reminiscent of crimson starbursts and electric acid infused 60s prints. With sleeves that slip and slide over barren shoulders and a neckline accenting the clavicle, a spectrum of kaleidoscopic swirls enhances an uninhibited, playful approach to the cotton stretch dress.

Draped in silver charms and a Native American necklace, the correlation between shapes executed in Alia's work and her inspiration from her jewelry becomes apparent. The layering of chains is always a favorite, as it creates a unique flair specific to personal taste, and adds a mellow contrast to the explosive shades of reds, blues and tan yellows.
Vintage Chloe platforms cross the ankles and toes with leather straps giving this week's look a harmonious montage of warm brown tree bark against a crimson sunset similar to the watercolor stains she delicately brushes. In this case, the canvas is her skin.
