The List: The Top 5 Milan Fashion Week Collections

With collections ranging from minimalist to all-out Eurotrashy, Milan Fashion Week is by far the most unpredictable of the bunch. But with some of the heaviest hitters in fashion choosing to show in this sultry city, every woman is bound to find the collection that sets their hearts afire. For me, cool hues, sweet details, transparent temptations, and new fringe statements made five shows in particular stand out.
5. PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND

A collection inspired by swimming pool paintings couldn't be more Spring/Summer. The opening looks at Pringle of Scotland successfully stimulated an aquatic feeling, with the mostly white palette, accented by other clean hues like cobalt and turquoise. An unexpected turn occurred, though, with 3-D engineer-striped pieces and then again with pretty origami-style detailing. Though somewhat lacking in cohesion, the looks were undeniably beautiful and most importantly, wearable.
4. VERSACE

Versace was seductively sweet. Mini-lengths and curve-hugging shapes - both staples of the house - were cake, but the zippers formed into heart shapes were the icing. Also loveable were Julie Verhoeven's cheery drawings as graphic prints. Spring is looking quite romantic for the Versace girl.
3. ALBERTA FERRETTI

Though I could do without much of the hyper-feminine fashion that exists in many Spring collections, Alberta Ferretti does it in a way that is much more interesting than her more youthful counterparts. She is inspired by woman rather than ingénue. Puerile tiered dresses were interpreted in a sophisticated way by banding each section. Her draping was lovely but unfussy. Sure, the flapper-ish undertones are well in line with the biggest trend in detailing in recent seasons. Even with this ubiquitous use of fringe, Ferretti's collection stands strong in its tried and true ethereal aesthetic.
2. FENDI

It was impossible not to love all the crinoline skirts at Fendi. What else could be more suited to create Spring-friendly versions of the robust shapes Karl Lagerfeld has made a signature of the house? Cutouts and sheer layers were quintessentially Milan sexy, like a modernist version of Prada F/W 2008. Perhaps Lagerfeld did not intend to incite that comparison. After all, he does it his way always. Many times, his way is the best way.
