Spring Forward
By Dana Poblete FOR LA2DAY.COM 21 Apr 2008

Spring has sprung, and so have some fresh trends. While I embrace the uprising of the 70s with pleasure, what I really love about this season is the modern sensibility behind everything from prints to primping. Whether daring like a new shape, or more subtle like a transitional accessory, standout details will make you look fresh as a daisy.
Tangerine lips – If you want to make a statement, say it with bold lips! For a pretty pout, I love orangey hues. From coral to tangerine, they make a girl look like a dream. My go-to shade is MAC’s M’Orange. While Kim Noorda (pictured above at the Louis Vuitton Spring 2008 show) looks striking with a bit of smokiness in her eyes, I would opt for a more fresh-faced look and pair this lip with just a lick of black liner on the top lid. In the most romantic of seasons, you wouldn’t want to pull attention away from your kisser!

Art-inspired prints – As I perused the Spring collections, I could barely contain myself at the sight of the artsy prints shown at Chloé and Dolce & Gabbana. The idea of paint-splattered dresses captures the breezy essence of spring. While Chloé was more art-student chic, Dolce & Gabbana was grown-up, which shows the range of this whimsical print. I’ve seen lovely translations of this at H&M and Zara, so you can certainly look like a walking masterpiece on a budget.

Round frames – I’m thrilled to see that oversized frames and Wayfarers are on their way out and designers like Proenza Schouler are finally ushering in a new shape in eyewear. Round frames are bold, and possibly a bit tricky to pull off. However, with my recent discovery of Benjamin Eyewear, I found that you don’t have to be so literal, ala John and Yoko. These specs pay homage to the 70s without looking too retro. Try Squaresville in Los Feliz for affordable versions of this new style in sunnies.
Ankle socks – Bid adieu to tights! Frankly, they are too hot and claustrophobic for the upcoming months. I understand though, that through the winter many girls have grown quite accustomed to their legwear. The idea of one less accessory can be unnerving to anyone. Ankle socks are the answer! A pack of 6 from Target will run you about $7—doable, no? It’s quite flattering, as seen on Chloë Sevigny. They work beautifully with oxfords and other utilitarian-type shoes, but even better with…
Wedges – No one is worse at traipsing around in heels than me. I find them uncomfortable and the click-clack sound they make on concrete suggests a woman of worldly sophistication whose shoes I am not yet ready to fill. But at 5’1”, I’ll take a vertical boost wherever I can get it. That’s why I’m totally living on the wedge! The marriage of style and comfort is ever-present in my new favourite shoe brand, Faryl Robin. Pictured below, the Arial in Sunset Red gives me heart palpitations. And the Asti in Mouse Grey—I’ve been seen doing everything from dancing to running uphill in them.
