In 1994 their relationship started out as business associates, before evolving into best friends, morphing into jewelry soul mates and now blossoming as partners in one of the most innovative vintage jewelry lines available. Nina Segal, the daughter of famed retail storeowner, Fred Segal, along with partner Ashleigh Cohen have taken their love and admiration of jewelry and recently produced their own line called NASH. The NASH collection includes vintage and antique charms on necklaces, rings, bangles, and earrings, ranging between $65 to $425.
Today we sit down with the ladies of NASH to discuss powdered wigs, Japanese shoppers and skulls.
Who is the most stylish person in history?
COHEN: I love the way Madonna always re-invents her style. Jackie O was pretty fab too.
SEGAL: Audrey Hepburn.
Who is the most stylish person you've met?
COHEN: We get some really cool Japanese customers in the store at Nina at Fred Segal Santa Monica. They put together the most far-out fashion forward ensembles!
SEGAL: Gwen Stefani. p.s. I agree with Ashleigh.
What is your favorite article of clothing?
COHEN: I am very fickle with clothing! I don't get attached to much for very long. Right now I have been obsessed with my black denim Stitch's Jeans cutoff shorts. I love summer!
SEGAL: Sun dresses.
What is your least favorite article of clothing?
SEGAL: My maternity clothes!
In which period of history do you think people dressed the best?
COHEN: 18th century. The powdered wigs, corsets, jewelry, gowns, gloves... so romantic!
SEGAL: My mom always said I should have grown up in the 60s... I am a hippie at heart.
In which period of history do you think people dressed the worst?
COHEN: Caveman times... not into the loin cloths.
SEGAL: The early 80s... not into shoulder pads.
Is there one item that is in style that you wish would go out?
COHEN: Logo T-shirts.
SEGAL: Skulls.
What are you wearing right now?
COHEN: Tangerine cardigan that I bought years ago in Paris (that Nina wants to steal), level 99 high waisted trouser jeans, Sharon Segal white tank, studded havaianas, and of course a bunch of NASH.
SEGAL: Jbrand skinnies, turquoise vintage Moschino blouse, Henry Begulin shoes and dripping with NASH.
What do you wish you were wearing right now?
COHEN: Vivian Westwood couture wedding gown.
SEGAL: The Mark Bower dress I saw in the window at Neiman's.
Are you afraid of Anna Wintour?
COHEN: No, I would love to meet her.
SEGAL: No, she seems fabulous.
