Questionnaire: Becky Stark

Becky Stark, the fanciful lead singer of the folk group Lavender Diamond, describes the film version of her hit Matador album "Imagine Our Love" (the film, directed by Maximilla Lukacs, carries the same name) as a an "earth liberation fashion fantasy." It's a film of pretty girls in prettier dresses saving the world from its many evils one song at a time.
Though the film isn't quite finished, Stark is ready to tickle our fancies at a sneak peak event this Tuesday May 27th at Los Angeles' Silent Movie Theatre where the film preview will act as centerpiece to a variety show that will also feature Eleni Mandell, Mia Doi Todd, the Chapin Sisters and Stark herself, in addition to the glorious old-fashioned whimsy of a puppet show, a kissing booth and the raffling off of vintage gowns.

On the eve of the event, Psychedelic Healing Visions: A Celebration of Lavender Diamond's film Imagine Our Love, Becky Stark sits down to discuss Dick Cheney, 19th century Native American dresses and wildflowers.
Who is the most stylish person in history? Elsa Schiaparelli is my favourite!
Who is the least stylish person in history? Dick Cheney. Maybe if we dressed him up he would feel better and stop being so evil.
If you were to give the world a make-over, how would you style it? I would definitely make everyone stop buying new clothes. There are enough clothes in the world already! All this manufacturing is completely out of control and way too toxic for the planet. I would also make everyone wear wildflowers in their hair. Although we have to make sure to leave the flowers for the bees because the bees need to drink the nectar; I guess people could wear silk flowers in their hair.
In which period of history do you think people dressed the best? I love the Native American dresses from the 19th century. Girls would spend about 6 years making a dress. When the dress was finished it was time for her to become a woman. I like the idea that everyone has one incredible dress that they made themselves; rather than the idea of having people in slavery so that some people can have lots of dresses.

In which period of history do you think people dressed the worst? Sometimes I feel like now is the worst time, especially in the U.S. where people wear sweatpants! I think that when you dress up it shows respect for the world. If people started to really dress beautifully and with care maybe everyone would treat the world with more respect. Is there one item that has gone out of style that you wish would come back? I wish that hats would really come back into style like in the 40s. I wish everyone would wear beautiful hats - with flowers and bows and things. |
Is there one item that is in style that you wish would go out? I really don't like jeans that are made to look old and yellowed. Why don't people just buy vintage jeans? There's an endless supply of second-hand jeans and I shudder to think about the chemicals unleashed on the planet to make these weird old-looking pants.
What are you wearing right now? A t-shirt and pants which is really strange because I never wear t-shirts or pants but lately I've been wearing these tight red corduroy pants! And I have this t-shirt that Devendra Banhart made that he just gave to me. It's dyed with tea and has a silver crescent moon and ocean waves painted on it.
What do you wish you were wearing right now? I wish I had a long black coat with a hood and perfect tall red boots.
Are you afraid of Anna Wintour? No way! I think Anna Wintour is amazing! I would like to talk with her. I'll bet she is really funny.
