MELROSE, EAST OF LA BREA

The Famous Melrose Avenue has always been a favorite among visitors all over the world as a wonderful place to go and see what LA. has to offer in fashion and scene. Now, with the ever quest of the unique and new, Melrose has expanded East and West outside the normal barriers of what was once considered the Mecca of cool. West Melrose now has famous shops such as Marc Jacobs, Miss Sixty, Betsey Johnson, and more. The West end of Melrose has positioned itself in the upper echelon of the design standard.
Contrary to the couture that is the west side of Melrose, the east end of the avenue is defining a new standard of fashion. La Brea has now become the marker that sets the east side apart. Venture to East of La Brea on Melrose to an area that is getting recognized for coming into its own individual style and flare, with amazing art galleries, collectables, and one of a kind stores. The community is thriving with artists, designers, writers, and scenesters that are helping to develop the style that exists here today. Long time locals are taking part in their community and are unknowingly a part of the new revolution of their area.
Stir Crazy Coffee shop has been a staple of the neighborhood for over 12 years and a meeting place for the creative independents seeking a forum in which to work and innovate new expressions. This small independently owned establishment was a milestone in the growth of the modern Melrose. It’s ambiance and anti-conformist attitude set the stage for total creative and independent growth rooted in a simple word…neighborhood.
That area of Melrose, just east of La Brea, has clearly formed into a true neighborhood. Local creatives and Intellectuals have popped up out of the repressive glossy trademarks that define West Melrose and come together to form their own mecca of cool. And cool is just the beginning. Words like hip, chic, creative, fresh and most importantly progressive, come to mind. The roots of underground LA style are rising to the surface and placing their markers from storefront to back alley. East Melrose, a far cry from the Fred Seigels of the West, is flying it’s true colors. And if the new black of last year was Marc Jacobs…I see the markers of the East rising in opposition…and each flag bares the new new black.
