Lou Doillon's Sartorial Savvy
By Dana Poblete FOR LA2DAY.COM 25 Apr 2008

It's only natural that the daughter of one of the fashion world’s most iconic women would be an icon in her own right. The irony lies in the fact that Lou Doillon’s mother, Jane Birkin, banned fashion magazines from their home when Lou was a wee lass. With style undeniably flowing through her bloodline, she managed to find her niche by drawing inspiration from historical and literary figures. For Fall 2008, the unconventionally beautiful French actress/model/designer chose an unlikely muse for her capsule collection for Lee Cooper—the Artful Dodger. It’s a delight to see how Lou translated this look into her collection, but even moreso in her real life styling.

Lou inherited more from her mum than just that big mouth and natural magnetism. Always a style maverick, her look is all about personal touches, which stem from her “genius way of thinking about clothes.” Rebellious in life and in dressing, she dresses to suit her mood. You may find her wearing couture for a trip to the market, or in basics at a society party. To discuss how to achieve her look would cheapen such a glowing spectacle. Rather than that, I would say take note from her and pull inspiration from anything you find beautiful. This could be nature, characters, paintings, etc. A certain color of a flower or a shape in architecture can incite so many ideas. Also what I love about Lou Lou—she takes brands and trends and throws them out the window. Instead of expensive skinny jeans and of-the-moment pieces, she opts for her own classic staples like high waists, top hats, and quirky details. Something about her irreverence makes her look so effortless, yet so utterly put-together. Must be a Parisian thing.
