Boutique: Switch

We officially have a new fantasy: owning a Beverly Hills boutique with our sister, spending our days trying on clothes and playing with diamond-heavy jewelry while our matching Malteses wrestle on the ground. Such is the charmed life of sisters Jennifer, 24, and Julia, 28, Cohen. The Monterey, California-natives own Switch on Beverly Drive and it's hard to decide whether to be jealous of their fashion sense, beauty or day job.
On a weekday evening Julia is buzzing around, swapping sizes and suggesting colors for a shopper tucked into the Matthew Williamson-wallpapered dressing room. The stylish and playful feeling floats throughout the entire store. White walls and fixtures allow the colors and fabrics of the clothes to pop and with just a few island tables, the store avoids the overwhelming feeling that many ambitious boutiques fall prey to.
The store's summer look is dominated by fanciful butterflies sprayed over the back wall, a whim indulged by the sisters searching for something cheerful. Crystal chandeliers dangle and a large plasma screen TV hangs over the register and is tuned to whatever fits the girls' fancy. Sports games are frequent broadcasts, entertainment for bored boyfriends or any of the besotted men that stop in to be around the beautiful sisters-cum-shopgirls. "You know, these are the man chairs," Julia explains, pointing to the overstuffed chairs facing the screen.
Giving the seats to the boys seems a fair allowance - no self-respecting shopper need sit when provided with the well-edited selection at Switch. Since December 2006, the girls, tired of carbon copy LA boutiques, have been dedicated to finding up-and-coming design stars. London label Rodnik shares space with Myne, Elizabeth and James, Hanii Y and Bensoni.
Switch's clothes are perfect for idiosyncratic girls who like to mix a dash of daring with a sleek respect for style when dressing. Summer is all about bright colors and easy, light-weight clothes for the Cohen sisters. "We're loving color right now," says Julia, citing vintage-style rompers and dresses as key pieces. As the fashionspeak moves to Fall '08, Jennifer digs out the shop's one remaining leather jacket by LA-label Grai and recounts, genuinely impressed, how they "blew out of it." So beloved is the lightweight, big-collared piece, origami-like in the vein of Yohji Yamamoto, that Switch has staked claim on an exclusive long-sleeve version for the fall.
The jewelry spread is a sparkly treasure trove being of a quality and size rarely seen in a small private shop. Switch Fine Jewelry came from a collaboration with a mystery jeweler and prices range from $500 to, oh, $50,000. When browsing it's essential to remember these aren't just baubles designed by a typical party girl preaching that diamonds are a girl's best friend. Julia, pre-med pre-fashion, spent a good part of her past career getting a gem education and proved the truest kind of sisterly love: inviting her kid sis along to the diamond shows. "I learned a lot about diamonds," she says grinning. "I'm obsessed."
The girls, one blonde, one brunette, both striking, seem utterly content in their fashion oasis, admitting it's a bit of a dream job. When asked about their personalities, Julia declares that she's the more organized of the two. Jennifer disagrees and they go back and forth, with Julia finally deciding that she's just "a little older, so more experienced." Jennifer looks skeptical and it becomes apparent that even in this charmed situation, they're still sisters.
