Boutique: Runway

When driving down the long stretch of La Brea to depart from or arrive to the 10 freeway, it is rather ordinary to bypass the herd of stores amongst the calamity of speeding cars and changing lights. Just south of Wilshire, a few blocks from the visually arresting Asahi building, sits one of my favorite hidden secrets for garment instant gratification. Painted in lemon yellow, Runway Boutique has a broad selection of colorful creations from both vintage and new local designers.

It's a blur of decades throughout the racks and rows, inducing a modern day flashback of merging eras with worldly prints. My fingers can't help but dance upon each article, from lemon and lime linen shorts to silkscreened mini dresses. Pucci inspired frocks lure me further in until I enter a Dali-daze by catching sight of a surrealist printed sarong. Flipping over price tags, I was shocked to see most items range from $20 - $60. I had to pinch myself to see if I had slipped into a dream state. I was indeed very conscious, and ready to satiate my wandering eye.

Runway

Amongst the contemporary cloths, Minuet has a silk striped 70s spaghetti strap dress painted in a pallet of purples, reds, blues and tans that screams summer and Suzanne Somers circa Three's Company. Cielo jeans in pink, blue, yellow and purple are streamed across a table like flags in the wind. Across the room, rainbow platforms with metallic straps compliment the colored faux snakeskin bags variously dispersed throughout the long, spacious room.

Still enjoying the hunt, I dig in both treasure chests full of vintage blouses and animal printed scarves, high-waist skirts and woven wraps. The possibilities were endless, and each item spoke to my personal style.

The accessories are epic, of course; crotched earrings and metal cuffs, gold and silver bangles and heart-shaped hoops. Strap on the desert sandals and explore the variety of leather corsets and tie dyed sashes. One gets lost in an imagination of characters and scenes when perusing the aisles, and it becomes clear that the real runway is the street that we walk on.
