The Top 5: Mexican Restaurants
By Chris Boyd FOR LA2DAY.COM 10 Sep 2008

To be honest, Mexican food is really hard to screw up. Yet, there is a fine art to the well-crafted empanada or taquito.
And considering this town is flippin' full of Mexican restaurants - most of which know a thing or two about handmade tortillas and salsa from scratch - there ain't no doubt the ones that made our list are damn good.
5. TACOMIENDO

The bottom line: hand made tortillas. You can't even find that at most sit-down places. This taco shop is as authentic as it gets, with a great carne asada recipe and delicious horchata.

4. EL COYOTE

Located in West Hollywood, it's an institution after more than 75 years in operation. The margaritas are some of the best in the city and the lively bar scene is an even bigger draw than the food, which includes such fare as ostrich tacos. For something more traditional, try the enchiladas or a plate of appetizers.

3. EL CHOLO
In business since 1925, El Cholo is known as L.A.'s oldest Mexican restaurant. Over the years, they've perfected the margaritas and the grande nacho plate. The chile relleno is another specialty and goes great with many of the combination plates. A popular hangout for nearby USC students, this place gets packed on the weekend.

2. DON ANTONIOS
Fueled by numerous appearances on The Hills, Don Antonio's is quickly rising as the most popular Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. Even if potential teeny-bopper idol sightings don't excite you, the margaritas and giant portions will.

Frida also has terrific
Frida also has terrific Mexican food. They just opened a new location at the Americana on Brand in Glendale. Mexican food is one of the best things about living in L.A. Seems like everyone swears up and down that the taco/burrito stand on their corner has the "best shit" in the city.
And I don't doubt it.
