Hands-on Dinner

Asa Tibs, Yebeg or Yebere Wot, Yabesha Gommen; all served on a bed of Injera. If that last sentence doesn't make any sense to you, don't worry; unless you're from Ethiopia, it probably won't. But if you're an adventurous eater you'll want to get educated as soon as you can; there's no better way to than to head down to Little Ethiopia on Fairfax and dive into one of the many amazing restaurants.

I recommend Nyala, where the decor is simple and the cuisine delectable. Dining Ethiopian style is probably tops on the list of fun ways to eat. There is no need for silverware, only a free hand and an open mind, as all dishes are served communally on a giant platter. At the bottom of the platter is Injera, which is a crepe-like bread made from teff flour. It is spongy, absorbent and basically just entertaining to eat.

As for the other words you may not know, it's great to start out with the #14 meat combination which includes Yebeg or Yebere Wot: lamb or beef marinated in red wine and spices. Just rip off a piece of Injera and scoop up a bite. The same goes for the Asa Tibs (sauteed White fish) and Yawaze Tibs (spicy sauteed beef).

Wash it all down with an excellent Ethiopian wine or beer (from a very respectable selection) and you have a truly unique dining experience. Nyala's is laid-back, simply decorated and even includes a full bar if you feel like just stopping into Little Ethiopia for a drink. It is perfect for a large group, given the communal serving style, or an intimate date. Of course, you're eating with your hands, so if it's your first time you might want to wait for the second or third date. And resist the urge to lick your fingers.
