Breakfast of Champions: DOUGHBOYS in Hollywood
By Adam Vourvoulis FOR LA2DAY.COM 06 Jul 2008

Waking up at 3pm on a Wednesday does have its down sides. You miss all the good AM T.V. programming, the world casts its judging, its jealous eye, and most of the places to get a decent breakfast have stopped serving. Not the case last Wednesday, when after a long night of heavy "fiesta-ing" a neighbor of mine asked me if I wanted to join him for a really-late breakfast at a place called Doughboys.

As an avid food blogger I've read many Doughboys posts about it closing and opening, solo cups, and rude owners. With the voices of bitter chowhounders in my head, I cautiously accepted the invitation. We pulled up to the Highland location around 4pm to a relatively empty restaurant; say a few laptop bound coffee drinkers. The pseudo industrial interior is nice, but the bizarre carrot/bread mural in the background is just confusing.
With an offering of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner you need not have to order Breakfast...but why would you not. It's a rather large menu with a big enough selection for any type of eater. Our waiter was very friendly and responsive and seemed almost glad to be turned away several times over our indecisiveness. They have a fairly comical approach to the menu, with amusing menu categories: Griddle Stuff, Taters, Egg Stuff, etc. The White Trash dish is a potato hash with bacon, chopped beef and onions all smothered in Velveeta Cheese. I spent my time waning over Griddle Stuff, unsure if a sweeter breakfast was in order. I eventually asked our server for help; explaining the criteria need for my meal. Eureka! The Breakfast Special: two eggs any style, choice of bacon or sausage and any two pancakes from the menu all for $8.25. Well balanced, a good sampling, and bacon. The pancakes we're doughy but not under cooked, very nice! The bacon was thick and chewy and the dandelion yellow eggs were actually cooked over easy. My confidant and I shared the Red Flannel Hash, an awesome variation of hash, that includes braised beef, potato, sweet potato, onion and roasted red beets that give it a lip staining color with a sweet savory touch and Almond Peach pancakes, a nutty sweet concoction that reminded my why I love breakfast so much.

Breakfast for lunch or dinner has always held a special place in my heart. It feels almost naughty. Looking over your shoulder to make sure no one sees you enjoying the fruits of the early morning laborers. Doughboys is the perfect place to go to recover from an all-nighter. With good food in my stomach and feeling almost totally sober, we drove away happy and satisfied watching the sun start to set thinking I'd be jealous of myself too.
Friendly staff, lots of choices, not to loud (at least at 4pm) and well put together food! Doughboys Bakery, 1156 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038 - Hollywood (323) 467-9117, www.doughboys.net

Totally agree on all counts.
Totally agree on all counts. The blueberry flaxseed pancakes are outstanding, and if you can break yourself of breakfast for dinner, the onion soup has all but a cult following. Great review!
