BANGERS, MASH & POUNDIES: Rowdy Irish Food
By Alyssa Lloyd FOR LA2DAY.COM 11 Mar 2008

Either the Irish food lexicon was created by someone with a temper or there's something else going on here. It seems to be a prerequisite that traditional Irish fare sound suggestive of a bar-room brawl. It also sometimes looks like the aftermath of one. Some of the scariest:
Bangers
In short...sausages of questionable origin. If you look up banger in The Oxford English Dictionary you'll find the definition an extraordinary lie. Huh.
Champs or Poundies
You'll get out some aggression making these suckers. To champ means to bruise, pound or smash, hence the term poundies. These are mashed potatoes with green onion, with a well of butter in the center. The mashed potatoes are eaten from around the outer edge of the well and dipped into the butter. Tasty.
Blood Pudding
Also known as Black pudding. Despite the appalling name and purple black color, this is another sausage quite popular and quite common throughout Europe. It is a combination of animal blood, suet, grains, raisins, and spices. Blood pudding is a traditional part of the Irish breakfast in an Irish pub or restaurant. Several slices of blood pudding may be served with white pudding, ham, eggs and potatoes as part of a very hearty, very animal-tastic breakfast. I think I'll go with a Guinness.
