The (S)avant Guide: The Week of November 11-16 in Art

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but what about robbery? Originally scheduled for October, the Karl Ferris psychedelic photography show will finally open this week at Mr. Musichead, after the entire exhibition was rumored to have been stolen in transit (perhaps a back-handed compliment of sorts to both the artist and the rock and roll legends he helped immortalize). Other oldies but goodies include an insider look at the rise of airbrush art in California, as well as the ongoing Louise Bourgeois career survey at MOCA...equal emphasis on old and good.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12
Overspray: Riding High With the Kings of California Airbrush Art

Few things say "Hollywood" like the smooth, glossy airbrushed images in Norman Hathaway's new book, Overspray: Riding High With the Kings of California Airbrush Art. Curated bookstore, Family, hosts this launch event, welcoming the author and some of the artists who helped put glistening, candy-colored lips and fingernails on the map.

Attack of the Fifty Foot Reels

Final Cut Pro does not exist for the participants in the 8th annual Attack of the Fifty Foot Reels. The filmmakers were challenged to make a movie with just one 50-foot cartridge of Super-8 film...and edit it entirely in camera! See the 200-second epics on the big screen and indulge your short attention span.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14
Louise Bourgeois

It may have opened a few weeks ago, but at almost 97 years old, the great Louise Bourgeois certainly deserves a mention here on the (S)avant Guide. Few artists have navigated the art world quite like Bourgeois, maintaining her independence while remaining distinctly ahead of the curve. MOCA has assembled the largest survey of her work in more than a decade, presenting drawings, prints, hand-made objects and some of her most well-known pieces, like Cumul I and the Red Room mixed media installations.

THE DETAILS: Louise Bourgeois
Exhibition runs through January, 25, 2009

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15
Karl Ferris: The Psychedelic Experience

Known as "the innovator of psychedelic photography" British photographer Karl Ferris is responsible for the trippy images we associate with Rock and Roll bands and musicians of the late ‘60s, (notably Cream, Donovan and Jimi Hendrix). Experimenting with fish-eyed lenses and blown-out, intensified color, Ferris drew upon his art historical idols - from Hieronymous Bosch to John Everett Millais - to compliment the revolutionary music of his subjects.
