Avant Guide: The Week of October 7-12 in Art

With the clock running out, the presidential candidates are taking their gloves off and gearing up to pull some final punches. Even the art world seems to be weighing in on the action - if a panel on voting regulations at the Hammer Museum is any indication.

Relief, however, comes this week in the form of charitable art-making, a brooding love triangle and a meditation on the nation's favorite past time(s). For those who might be nostalgic for the days when crooks and liars dodged questions in wing-tipped shoes and preferred rum runners to front-runners, an exhibition of vintage mug shots provides an intimate look at the men who voted early and, sometimes, more than once.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7
Counting Votes and Making Votes Count

Risk election politics burnout and discover the fine art of...voting regulations? This live screening of the second Presidential Debate will be followed by a discussion with California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, the woman in charge of ironing the kinks out of the voting process. Bowen will be joined by Professor Richard Hasen, an expert on voting systems and journalist/filmmaker Ian Masters.

Crazed Fruit

The otaku influenced atmosphere of Royal/T provides the perfect setting for a viewing of Crazed Fruit, the Japanese New Wave classic that caused quite a stir after its 1956 release. The film, directed by Ko Nakahira and based on a novel of the same name, follows two brothers as they compete for the affections of the same woman in sexually awakened, post-war Japan.

Booked: Vintage Mugshot Photography

No puffy-eyed, mascara-streaked starlets here. Instead, Booked features original police mug shots and line-up photos spanning the 1880s to the 1950s. A motley crew of gangsters, crooks and con artists, including Bugsy Siegel, Alvin Karpis and Lucky Luciano pose for the camera, with a chilling (and at times, comical) lack of remorse.

Conversations with Artists: Collier Schorr

(Contemporary Projects 11: Hard Targets - Masculinity and Sport)

In an effort to "revise the time-honored archetype of the male athlete as an aggressive, overtly heterosexual, hyper-competitive and emotionally remote subject," LACMA has put together Hard Targets - Masculinity and Sport, a group show that uses athletic rituals and accoutrements to explore another, possibly softer, side of sports. Featured artist Collier Schorr, is willing to talk about it.
